This coffee comes to us from the Ulya Mill, located in the heart of Wahgi Valley, in Papua New Guinea's Western Highlands. High altitude and cool temperatures make this an ideal location for high-quality coffee.

At the Ulya mill, coffee cherries are purchased and sorted, depulped, fermented for 24 hours in tanks without water, washed, then dried on tarpaulins. Once the coffee is dried to the appropriate level, it’s sent to the Kagamuga dry mill in Mount Hagen for hulling and final sorting for export.

The majority of coffee production in PNG comes from smallholder farmers, each with around 1–2 hectares called “gardens” in which they grow small amounts of coffee and other subsistence crops. Less than 3% of the country is used for commercial agriculture, and forest makes up more than 63% of Papua New Guinea’s landscape. Among the country’s many indigenous populations, there are nearly 840 languages, though individual communities might comprise only a few hundred people. Tok Pisin (Pidgin English) is the common trade language that ties everyone together. The vibe is: tropical, remote, and unblemished.
